Subjects: Wildflowers, birds and perhaps landscapes
Within the last week Guy Turenne posted on Facebook great photographs of wildflowers and birds. I hope that the wildflower bloom will continue. The current weather forecast seems favorable, rain mid-week in Northeast Colorado and good weather on July 8th. My plan is to take the Pawnee National Grassland Self-Guided Birding Tour which is approximately 21 miles long on gravel road. The tour is expected to take 2 to 3 hours by car when done at a leasurely pace. Please bring water (and/or beverages) and food (snacks, sandwiches, etc) as these are unavailable on the birding tour. All club members are most welcome to join this outing. Please let me know if you will attend so that no one is left behind.
Cheers,
Paul Marcoux

Sat 7/15 - Wed 7/19
The qualifying events are open to the public at no charge (as opposed to the main parts of Cheyenne Frontier Days).
Dress code: long pants. Western wear suggested.
Recommend sun protection like hats and sunscreen.
Available shooting locations include “behind the chutes”, the media pit, and above chute 9. The latter two are accessed by walking in the track around the area.
For directions, search for "Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum 4610 Carey Ave Frontier Park, Cheyenne, WY" in Google. Park in the dirt parking lot to the south and enter at gate 11.
7/16 @8am; Cheyenne Frontier Days Bucking Horse Roundup
Bucking Horse Roundup, Sunday, July 16th, 8am Horse Creek and Yellowstone Road, Cheyenne. at the same time Slack in the CFD Arena. Good evening! And Happy 5th. I'm not sure if you'd be interested in this but.... CFD is doing a horse roundup again this year. It's not very exciting but it's a chance, with a long lens, to photograph some horses out in a large pasture north of Cheyenne. There's a cookout breakfast (I don't know if you can get tickets, I'm trying to find out) that also allows you to get a little closer to the horses. Theres a video link below. It's not a fast shoot by any means. Essentially the various horse stock vendors bring all the horses into this pasture and turn them loose. The horses migrate around for at least 30 minutes, maybe more, to get used to each other. There's lots of vehicles in the back ground, horse trailers, pickups etc., that make up an informal curtailment. I'll look for my old unprocessed images and see what I can find. It's open to the public and there's quite a few folks out there. An opportunity to photograph running horses if you, or any of the club are interested. Supposedly it starts at 7am BUT for parking (Horse Creek Rd and Yellowstone Rd., 6:30 am will cut way down on how much walking you'll have to do. Once the horses are rounded up and they leave to go back south to Cheyenne on Hynds avenue. You have to be ahead of the herd to get shots. I haven't done that part. I usuallly head back to Cheyenne and park in the CFD parking lot (where you guys park) and then walk back to the northern most gate to get the horses coming back into CFD (northern most gate). Public access, yes but there's generally a lot of folks out there. You guys can meet me there if you like. No obligations. A lot of hassel for what can be a lot of lousy shots. There's also slack that day starting at 7am, Team roping at 7am and the CFD grounds are open so parking is easy. I'll be shooting the roundup for both CFD and Visit Cheyenne so my times and accesses are different. Take I25 north to Horse Creek Rd. Right to Yellowstone Road. It's right there at the corner of both roads and there will be a lot of vehicles by 8am. Or, take I25 N to Central ave. Go right to Yellowtone Rd., turn left at the light and you'll go about 6 miles to get to Horse Creek. Parkig is always nasty. I go early (assignment) and park facing south on Yellowstone so I can get out easier. Much easier. Then I head back to CFD to photo the horses coming in. No obligations and no guarantees....... same old drill. But again it's a chance to photo moving horses in a pasture. Definitely the longest lenses you have. Ciao for now. And yes, I hope to see you guys next week at the picnic!!! - Judy Myers
7/21 - 7/30 Cheyenne Frontier Days (not the slack events beforehand)
Colorado Dragon Boat Festival
Sat 7/22 - Sun 7/23 at Sloan's Lake Park in Denver
Parking at Auraria Campus $5.75 self pay, and free shuttle to the festival (6:30am-8pm)
Tom Horn Days: 8/11-8/13, Bosler, WY
This was suggested by Judy Myers. Simplest description is that it’s a rodeo event on a ranch about 20 miles north of Laramie. There is a ticket cost (this can be seen on the second web site, not clear from the Facebook page). Facilities would presumably be quite limited compared to Cheyenne Frontier Days or Greeley Stampede. Second web page has the comment “a real 1890s feel”.
