Club Outings

Thursday August 22 @4:00 PM Sunflower Fields
Anderson Farms, 6728 County Road 3 1/4, Erie, CO 80516
(note: it may be easier to find this address on car navigation systems as “Terror in the Corn”, which is the farm's haunted house during Halloween season)
Carpool from the Harmony Transfer Station at 3:00 PM
There is a cost to members (see details below).
This is a very large field reportedly containing 70 species of sunflowers. There should be macro opportunities both with sunflowers and insects on them. There may also be a number of birds in the fields, although they will tend to flee as a group when people approach. https://andersonfarms.com/sunflowers/
It costs $10 to enter the sunflower fields and I recommend to buy tickets at the door. This is a discount from their normal price due to hailstorm damage on July 20 — I am uncertain how much different the fields would look had there been no hailstorm. While you can buy a ticket online, there is an additional online purchase surcharge and also I don’t think you would be able to get a refund if we need to cancel at the last second for very bad weather (see below).
You are welcome to bring others along to pick sunflowers or to pick them yourself after shooting, but note that the $10 above does NOT include the right to pick sunflowers. You would have to buy a container if you want to pick sunflowers (see prices online, but at least another $10 for the smallest container, and I believe they would provide clippers).
Be prepared for sun or possibly rain, and maybe insects if one wanted to stay into the golden hour (sunset is estimated at 7:46 PM).
In the event of heavy rain or thunderstorms, a decision will be made on canceling at 4:00 PM AT THE SITE.
Although I would have preferred a different date, August has a lot of photographic activities which could conflict with an outing, and the farm is not open every day and will close for sunflower viewing/picking at the end of August.
Please reply to info@fcdcc.com if you intend to go and whether you want to carpool.
Thanks, Albert

If you are thinking of participating by taking photos and submitting them, please read the FAQ and other relevant parts of the web site. (If you’re wondering about the choice of date: the web site describes August 19 as “the birthday of photography” for the choice of this date. Per Wikipedia, on this date in 1839, the French Academy of Sciences and Académie des Beaux-Arts met jointly and first publicly discussed the photographic process now commonly known as daguerrotype.)
