2023-04-18 Fine Art Photography SIG meeting notes

We met online using ZOOM 6:00pm-8:30pm

The goal of our Fine Art Photography SIG is to help each other to create fine art from our photography.
The Fine Art SIG is a place where artists support each other and nurture creativity in others.
Unrequested criticism can feed an artist's fear of failure and stifle their creative growth.

Color grading video suggestions from Andy
And now for something completely different: Some interesting videos on color grading. Very, very different than how I usually think about editing pictures. I learned a lot from the first video by Joanna Kustra. This explains a lot of what you see in fashion magazines. Lots of aesthetic things to consider. I have seen the distracting effect she mentions where you have too many different bright colors – you’re not sure where to look. Her idea to create depth with warmer color in front and bluer color in back makes sense: atmospheric haze gives an increasing blue cast to mountains far away. We are trained to see this, and this technique is used as a depth cue in computer graphics. But Joanna applies this technique to portraits. Clever! For color spaces, she suggests sRGB for the web and AdobeRGB for printing. Her work is mostly for the print world, so she uses a color managed AdobeRGB workflow.

Color grading video suggestion from Paul Beiser A good tutorial on using the tools for Color Grading in Lightroom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qwSRvq_y4nw. The differences he shows between this and the HSL panel were eye opening, and I liked his use of a greyscale gradient.

CONSTRUCTIVE CRITIQUES AND PERSONAL PROJECTS
We discussed several personal projects

PICK A TOPIC FOR THE NEXT MEETING
We picked the topic "more ICM or intentional camera movement " after reviewing some of the video resources

AGENDA FOR OUR NEXT FINE ART PHOTOGRAPHY SIG MEETING - Tue 5/16/2023 @6:00pm
1. The main topic will be "Intentional Camera Movement".
2. We will hold constructive critiques (optional) Pick as many as 3 images that you would like critiqued, and be prepared to show them by sharing your screen during the ZOOM meeting.
3. We will pick a topic for the next meeting

If you don't have time to research the topic, or you don't have any images that you want to have critiqued, that is OK, you can just attend the meeting and participate when you want.

I would like to see more pictures from our Fine Art SIG in the regular club meeting slideshows, and especially on the new Facebook page: Fort Collins Photo Art which is open to the public and more oriented towards Fine Art.

Jim Limburg will send out the Meeting ID, passcode, and meeting link when we have scheduled the meeting, which will be about a week before the meeting date.

Please email Mike, info@fcdcc.com, when you find mistakes, missing information or if you have suggestions for the Fine Art Photography SIG and I will try to address the issues.
