Club Outing
Wed 7/18 & Sat 7/28 - CSU Mountain Campus and Pingree Park Valley
RSVP Deborah Cowan if you want to go on the outing
We have 2 dates reserved for the FCDCC to visit the CSU Mountain Campus and the surrounding area: Wednesday, July 18th and Saturday, July 28th. If you would like to sign up, please contact Deborah Cowan at cowandesign27@gmail.com and indicate which day you would like to go.
There are opportunities to photograph wildflowers and wildlife. Moose are not guaranteed… sometimes they are around and sometimes not. Historic buildings and artifacts in the valley are from the homesteaders who settled the Pingree Valley in the early 1900’s. There are landscape shots, and in the case of the plane crash site, leftover airplane parts (much of the small pieces of wreckage have been removed over the years by hikers). Bring the camera and lenses that you think you will need. Carry water! Bring sun protection and a rain coat. Please be advised that it can be dangerous to hike in Levi’s; if your jeans get wet in a rainstorm, they can cause hypothermia. Choose fast-drying hiking pants instead.
For carpooling, we will meet at the King Soopers parking lot on North College Avenue at 6 AM each morning. The drive up the Poudre Canyon and County Road 63E takes about 1 hour and 45 minutes (sometimes a little longer depending on the road). The cost is $15.00 per person for hot lunch and use of the restrooms. Please make out a check to FCDCC and hand it to me in the parking lot before we leave; I will pass them on to Rich Ernst, Treasurer.
Upon arrival, we will park and then stop in Hotchkiss Lodge to use the restrooms. I will have some maps of the area. There are many hikes available:
The Valley Loop staying at 9000 feet and about 2 miles long
Denny’s Point elevation 9,200 + feet
The B-17 plane crash site elevation 10,000 + feet
Stormy Peaks elevation 12,148 feet
The Waterfall (small but beautiful) elevation 9,500 feet
Cirque Meadows elevation 9,800 feet
Emmaline Lake elevation 11,000 feet
Note: If you choose Emmaline or Stormy Peaks, you will most likely not be back in time for lunch.
There are more hikes leaving from the Pingree Valley. Please check USGS topo maps to see what else is around. Be advised, some of the other hikes are long, high in elevation, with difficult terrain, and/or have trails that are tricky to follow.
We will rendez-vous at the Dining Hall for lunch, served between Noon and 1:00 PM. Stop at the meal-check table and give your name, and then proceed through the line. Lunch is cafeteria-style, vegetarian and gluten-free options available. There will be other groups on campus and eating lunch both days. Tables seat 8 people, and we should be able to secure a table or two for our group.
We can resume taking photographs after lunch. If some people want to return to town right away, we should organize our carpooling in the morning to cover the various estimated return times. Otherwise, departure time is planned for 3 PM with arrival back at King Soopers at least by 5 PM.
A couple of reminders:
Cell phones will not work once we head up Hwy 14 into the Poudre Canyon. Pay phones (yes, the old-fashioned coin-operated ones) are located on campus.
Stay hydrated: carry water on your hike and remember to drink it even if you are not thirsty. Please stay a respectful distance away from wildlife.
